How to Take Care of Your Activewear
All clothing comes with a “care label” sewn into the clothing. How many of us actually take the time to read the instructions on how to launder our clothing? I know I usually don’t. Activewear isn’t cheap though, so there’s no point in ruining it on purpose. Here are a few tips I follow to keep my activewear looking amazing for as long as possible.
Cold Water – Always wash your activewear with cold water, never use warm or hot water as that can damage delicate fabrics, cause colors to bleed, or cause clothing to shrink.
Inside Out – Wash your leggings inside out. This helps prevent snags and damage from other items.
Detergent – I didn’t used to believe that detergent mattered. I always buy the regular detergent that’s unscented, etc. because I have sensitive skin. However, I realized that gym clothing is different, you’re sweating, moving, etc. and sometimes that smell lingers in clothing. Then I discovered Nathan Sport Wash Laundry Detergent. This detergent is made to get gym smells out of your clothing, and it really does work. It doesn’t have a scent that could bother someone sensitive to smells, and a little goes a long way. Another detergent tip, a little goes a long way. Don’t over do it on the detergent or it could actually have the opposite effect on your clothing.
Type of Cloths – Only wash your activewear with other activewear! Jeans, zippers, clasps, etc. can potentially destroy your delicate activewear fabrics. Do yourself a favor and don’t let this be a possibility. Save your clothes by only washing like kind clothing together.
Never use the Dryer – Never put your activewear in the dryer. The heat can damage the fabric and dramatically reduce the life of your clothing. I always always air dry my activewear on a drying rack.
Know your Fabric – Some fabrics simply are not made for certain activities. I’d never be caught dead running or sitting on anything rough in my Lululemon Aligns. This type of fabric, or any brushed fabric is incredibly soft (which is why we love it), but it can snag and pill more easily. Fabrics with a slick feel (not brushed) are better for cardio and high intensity days where you have more friction.
